BRMB TEAM

Colin Hughes

Writer / Researcher

Colin’s business card lists “Master of Many Disguises” as his occupation. He handles all the back end operations of a high end furniture store in north-east Toronto, is the technical director and lighting designer at a local roadhouse theatre, coordinating all the concerts and events that hit the stage and has recently taken an expanded role research writing for the Canada’s Backroad Mapbooks.

Colin was smitten by the outdoors at an early age as his family spent their summers camping and traveling across Canada. When he purchased his first Land Rover fifteen years ago, it allowed him to travel further out to explore. An avid hiker, mountain biker and canoeist, he’s always on the look-out for new destinations to visit and having a 4x4 vehicle has become a means to that end. Colin and his wife reside in a home they built on a two acre bush lot, about an hour north-east of Toronto.

What is your favorite thing about writing for the BRMB?

Finding new and interesting locations for people to get out and discover. My research has been inspiration for many of my trips too.

What is your favorite movie?

Blade Runner, I’ve watched it at least ten times.

Favorite Outdoor Activity?

Really, anything that gets me into the outdoors but there is nothing like paddling a canoe through a still lake at dusk or dawn.

Best Childhood Travel Adventure?

Visiting Banff before it went tourist. Waking up and heading out of the trailer home type motels to feed deer on the front lawn or sitting in our car at the dump, watching the bears forage for food.

Favorite Band?

Hands down, Rush, I’ve seen them on many occasions and have had the chance to chat with a couple of the lads as well. Very down to earth and humble about their success.

Dream Vacation: New Zealand

Best Wild Animal Encounter?

In Algonquin Park, a line female wolf came out of the woods and followed us as we hiked along an abandoned logging road. It stayed with us for at least a half hour, right up until we came out into the clearing where our 4x4 was parked.

Favorite Sport? NFL football

What BRMB product are you most looking forward to using and why?

I always have the mapbook for the area I am travelling with me in case an opportunity to explore presents itself.
