From forest to wetland to the barren Canadian Shield, Ontario contains a wide variety of rich habitat where big and small game can be found. But, as any experienced hunter will attest, a successful hunt requires the right combination of planning, skill, determination and luck. To give you the competitive advantage this fall hunting season, approach the beautiful Ontario backcountry as a smart hunter. Here are a few steps you can take and some products that we offer to help you out this hunting season:

Rules and Regulations

The first thing you should do is to educate yourself on all rules and regulations relating to hunting in Ontario. You can find the complete Hunting Regulations Summary for Ontario HERE. All Ontario residents who wish to go hunting must complete the Hunter Education Course prior to receiving their hunting license. Hunters must also be aware of the different hunting seasons that vary depending on species and region (Ontario is divided into 95 Wildlife Management Units). The Hunting Regulations Summary is an excellent resource for up-to-date info on open hunting seasons.

Where to Hunt

Hunting is possible on much of Ontario’s Crown Land, some Conservation Authorities, a few County Forests and a select number of Provincial Parks. Our Backroad Mapbooks, and Backroad GPS Maps are a great resource for identifying Crown Land in Ontario, as well as other areas where hunting is permitted. Most big game, such as bear, deer and moose, is harvested in the northern parts of the province, while southern Ontario offers plenty of hunting opportunities for waterfowl such as ducks and geese as well as other small game. Places like Simcoe County are famous for their wild turkey hunting, while those looking to bag a moose can try the area north and west of Thunder Bay. The further north you go, the lower the hunting pressure and the higher your chances of success will be.

Backroad Mapbooks

Our classic Ontario Backroad Mapbooks are a tried and tested resource for Ontario hunters. We offer detailed descriptions of species, tips for how to hunt them as well as a breakdown of Ontario’s WMUs (Wildlife Management Units). Recently, we have added Crown Land data to our industry-leading maps, so hunters can easily identify public and private land for all of the province north of Toronto. We have also combined our Cottage Country and Eastern Ontario titles into one handy Mapbook, creating a wide-ranging hunting resource for most of Southern Ontario.

Waterproof Rec Maps

Our Waterproof Maps are foldable, durable and tear-resistant, making them the ideal tool for navigating the rugged wilderness of Ontario. We offer detailed waterproof maps for Algonquin Provincial Park and Bancroft District Crown Land.

These Waterproof Maps offer the precise cartographic detail you have come to expect from our products, along with info on campsites, parks, trails and more. Some of the best hunting in Ontario is found in areas of extreme weather, and these maps are guaranteed to stand up to the elements.

TOPO Maps

Printed on 34″ x 46.25″ paper, these maps are BIG, lightweight and easy to read. With map scales starting at 1:50,000, our industry-leading shaded relief and contour lines are even clearer than they appear in our Backroad Mapbooks. The BRMB TOPO maps can be printed on regular paper and, new as of 2019, on a more durable, waterproof paper. These maps can come folded so they easily fit in your pocket or backpack as well as flat so you can hang them on the cottage wall or lay them on the kitchen table to help plan your outing.

Backroad GPS Maps

Our Garmin-licensed Ontario Backroad GPS Maps provide you with unparalleled cartographic detail at 10,000, 20,000 or
50,000 base scale with easy-to-read relief shading, contours, smart background and searchable WMUs and easily identifiable Crown Land areas.
